French Defense

A solid defense that quickly challenges e4 and often leads to pawn chains with clear plans for both sides.

C00 ECO Intermediate Side: Black
Reference line

Position after the reference line

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5

Key ideas

  1. Challenge White's center immediately with ...d5.
  2. Attack the pawn chain with ...c5 and sometimes ...f6.
  3. Find the right moment to activate the light-squared bishop.

Typical plan

Develop around the ...c5 break and pressure d4 instead of defending the e6-chain passively.

Watch for

The c8-bishop can remain restricted if Black does not plan how to activate it.
