Tactical Sacrifices

Learn when a sacrifice is sound and when it is only hope chess.

Intermediate Tactics 40 min

What Makes a Sacrifice Correct?

A sacrifice gives up material for something concrete: checkmate, winning material, a lasting attack, time, or a positional bind. It must be calculated, not guessed.

Practical Checklist

  • Is the enemy king exposed?
  • Do you have enough attackers near the king?
  • Can the opponent return material and neutralize the attack?
  • Do you have a clear follow-up after the sacrifice?
